16. Back of The Pack Jack

“Back of the Pack” Jack was a canary; in fact, he had no knack for tact

He lacked all the luck; he quacked like a duck and the canaries cut him no slack

He tried to adapt and act like the pack, but the skills he just seemed to lack

When the canaries looked back, they kept giving him flak, so his brain he started to wrack

And his beak he started to clack, saying, if they were all sheep, he’d most certainly be black

Or if they were all teeth, he’d most certainly be plaque

If they were masters of their trade, he’d be a hack

Or if they were a windshield in the shade, he’d be a big crack

But an attack never came from the batch with a thwack or a whack

Only enough looks and chat to make his brain react

He thought if they were a train, he was off the track

Or if they were a mansion, he’d be a shack out back

If they were a meal, he was just a snack

If they were strong lungs, he’d be an asthma attack

If they were a nail, he was merely a tack

So he decided to go and ask his friend Mack, why they racked his mind with so many smacks

Mack said, “Jack … you don’t understand, we’re trying to make you a better man

We’re tough on you, but don’t let it defeat you

You must set your goal high, and then no one will reach you

If you let what we say keep you down and out

Then you’ll never know how good you could have turned out.

So whether you’re a canary or a partridge in a pear tree you decide who you want to be

And that will define your legacy. Not me.”

Jack looked at this scolder and took a long time to think of these words that he said

And as Jack grew older, so did the chip on his shoulder and he remained a grumpy old bird instead
